Milei closes off tour with Italian president, prime minister encounters

President Javier Milei meets with his Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome, eyeing “new stage” in bilateral ties.

President Javier Milei met with Italy’s top leaders on Monday in Rome as he closed off first multi-stop foreign tour.

The La Libertad Avanza leader met with his Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella, with whom he agreed on the need to "initiate a new stage" in bilateral ties to generate greater confidence for investors, and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Milei met with President Mattarella at the Palazzo del Quirinale. Talks between the leaders  focused on strategies to advance the relationship between the two nations.

During the meeting, the two leaders agreed to initiate a "new stage in the bilateral relationship and to give a sign of confidence for investments," said government sources in Buenos Aires.

Later, Milei met with Meloni for about an hour at Palazzo Chigi, the seat of the Italian government. He was received by the Italian premier and together they listened to the military band play some tunes as they walked across the red carpet into the building.

The aim of the meeting was to deepen the bilateral relationship between the two countries and develop a joint work agenda, said a government statement.

Meloni took office October 2022 at the head of a nationalist government, running on an anti-immigration ticket. She is the leader of the post-Fascist Brothers of Italy party, which grew out of the Italian Social Movement (MSI) – a party formed by supporters of Mussolini after World War II.
