Official fortunes: New minister’s statement shakes up Milei Cabinet rich list

Argentina’s new Deregulation & State Transformation Minister Federico Sturzenegger’s sworn affidavit places him as the fourth-richest member of Javier Milei’s Cabinet. President now ranks seventh on a list topped by Foreign Minister Diana Mondino.

Federico Sturzenegger, the newest member of Javier Milei’s government, has submitted a sworn affidavit declaring his assets. With it, he became the fourth-richest member of the President’s Cabinet, with a net worth of 1.77 billion pesos (around US$1.8 million at the official exchange rate).

Outstripping the new Deregulation & State Transformation minister are Economy Minister Luis ‘Toto’ Caputo in third with 2.307 billion pesos and Justice Minister Mariano Cúneo Libarona in second, who declared 6.627 billion pesos.

Foreign Minister Diana Mondino remains the wealthiest with a declared 9.854 billion pesos, according to a ranking put together by Perfil

Around 78 percent of the wealth declared by Sturzenegger, who heads a new portfolio established by Milei’s La Libertad Avanza administration this July, is made up of deposits held overseas.

However, he is far from the only official who has assets held overseas.

Mondino’s fortune includes two houses in Argentina, plots of land, rural real-estate holdings, and vehicles, including a Mercedes Benz C250. The official also declared shares, securities and bonds, as well as deposits worth 16 million pesos (domestic) and 86 million pesos (overseas).

Cúneo Libarona, who heads the Justice Ministry, declared 24 apartments (including one in Miami, United States), six houses (including one in Uruguay), two automobiles (an Audi Q5OT and a Honda Rural CRV LX) and deposits abroad totalling 4.9 billion pesos.

Caputo's assets included two apartments, three plots of land and a rural property without a dwelling. He also declared three cars (two Kia Carnival Ex and a Volvo XC90 T6), a dinghy, yacht and an all-terrain vehicle. Almost all of his deposits were held overseas, though he has public and private bonds in Argentina.

Sturzenegger's judicial presentation, required by law, displaces Cabinet Chief Guillermo Francos (334 million pesos) from third place. The former Interior minister is followed by Patricia Bullrich (55 million pesos).

President Milei sits in seventh place. When he took office in December 2023, the La Libertad Avanza leader declared a net worth of 54 million pesos between savings, real estate and vehicles.

The head of state previously also made a sworn affidavit in 2022, when he served as a national deputy, declared assets of 21 million pesos.

Some of Milei’s top officials sit at the other end of the scale from their wealthier officials.

Defence Minister Luis Petri declared assets of 15 million pesos, while Vice-President Victoria Villarruel has a net wroth of four million pesos, made up of an apartment in Buenos Aries City, 900,000 pesos in cash and US$2,000 in cash.

By a large margin, the least wealthiest member of the Cabinet is Milei’s sister, presidential chief-of-staff Karina Milei, who declared a net worth of 1.7 million pesos, mostly made up of a 150-square metre flat in Vicente López valued at 1.4 million pesos.
