Argentina’s Vice-President Victoria Villarruel says the government wants her to resign her post, but that she won’t give them the satisfaction.
Villarruel’s relationship with President Javier Milei and his inner circle has long been tense.
The extent of the breakdown was laid bare last Sunday when the duo came face-to-face on the steps of the National Congress building, before the head of state’s keynote address to the Legislative Assembly.
Argentina’s top two leaders exchanged only the lightest of handshakes and did not even share a glance.
Minutes later, Villarruel appeared to use her shoulder to barge aside Presidential Chief-of-Staff Karina Milei, the head of state’s sister, on her way to the chamber.
On Monday night, the VP alleged on social media outright that the ruling party is seeking her resignation – a proposal she rejected.
“That’s what they want. My resignation. But they’re not going to get it. Until 10/12/27 I will carry out my duties honestly. If someone doesn’t like it, they can vote as they wish at the next election. Regards,” she wrote, responding to a user who had called on her to resign if she “still had some dignity.”
