Composer, musician and rock nacional icon Charly García has released his first album in seven years: the eagerly anticipated La lógica del escorpión (“The Logic of the Scorpion”).
The 13-track release, coinciding with Día del maestro (“Teacher’s Day”), is García’s 14th album and the first since 2017’s Random.
It is released digitally at 9pm local time, though a special limited-edition deluxe vinyl record was available to collect today for those who pre-ordered from local record shops.
A cheaper, simpler version of the package will be released on vinyl and CD later this year for those who didn’t reserve a copy of the special edition, which was limited to 1,000 copies.
A fortnight ago, critics, friends, family members and celebrities attended an exclusive listening session party at which the album was presented and premiered for the first time, allowing some details of the project to leak out.
García’s health has deteriorated in recent years and his public appearances are few and far between. In recent months, images of him at recording studios have been shared, as well as brief video clips from a mini-recital he performed at the Faena Hotel in Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires City.
The creation of La lógica del escorpión was far from straightforward and the project was previously shelved as it ran into problems.
Primarily recorded between 2020 and 2022, García worked on the record towards the end of the Covid-19 pandemic, accompanied by Guillermo Vega, his personal assistant.
García, 72, “recorded during the afternoon and at night, under the technical guise of Matías Sznaider, a young sound engineer he recruited,” reported national daily Clarín.
A number of guest musicians feature on the recordings, including iconic stars and former collaborators such as David Lebón, Pedro Aznar and Fito Páez.
Also featured are drummer Fernando Samalea, vocalists Rosario Ortega and Hilda Lizarazu, guitarist Fernando Kabusacki and Toño Silva and Kiuge Hayashida, two members of The Prostitution, García’s backing band.
The 13-track release includes a number of covers, including songs by English-language artists David Bowie, John Lennon and The Byrds.
The star’s Instagram account hailed the release in a post on the social network.
“On Teacher's Day, this is the gift that Maestro García is giving us, a collector's album,” read the post, highlighting the release of the 120,000-peso special edition vinyl record.
